Oct 07, 2011 · I am making several 16 x 22 inch (inside dimension) drawers 12" high to hold electrical and plumbing fittings. Most drawers have 1/4" bottoms but I am concerned about the weight. How thick would you make the bottom? (I have 1/4" and 1/2" plywood in the shop) Is there a set of guidelines as to how to determine the thickness of a drawer bottom? Plywood for drawer bottoms is available in 1/4", 3/8", and 1/2" thickness. 3/8" thick plywood is the best overall thickness for drawer bottoms and is available for Maple, Birch, Beech, Cherry, and Walnut. 1/4" and 1/2" thickness is available for all wood species and in White or Almond Melamine as well as other options. Mar 07, 2012 · I am building more drawers for cabinets in my shop. The drawers are 16.5 inches wide by 22 inches deep. Some will be 6 inches high (5.5 usable with 1/4 inch bottom; 5 usable with 1/2 inch bottom). Some of the drawers will have heavy items (marbles, ball bearings, etc.). Others will have lighter stuff like pen & pencil hardware, bottle stopper hardware.
Oct 03, 2012 · Its pretty darn strong too. All my shop drawer, kitchen drawer are made this way. At my work place with the School District I’ve built a lot drawers with 1/4 bottoms for years. No problems. I the picture below my wife who weight in at 120 lbs is standing smack in the middle of a 22 X 44’’ drawer that has a 1/4’’ BB bottom. May 31, 2007 · The drawers will be 22 1/4 inches wide and 26 inches deep and 5 3/4 inches high. I am using 1/2 birch plywood as the sides, front and back of the drawer box and will have a 3/4 inch drawer front with overlay (3/8). The extension slides will be full 26″ slides by accuride. My question is what thickness should the bottom be?
