LVMH to Fund Hotel Stays for Women Fleeing Domestic Violence – WWD

PARIS — LVMH Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton plans to fund hotel stays for women who are victims of domestic violence in France, responding to a government call on the private sector to back efforts to reduce violence against women.

“The support of LVMH will allow us to bring a very concrete and immediate solution to dangerous situations,” said Élisabeth Moreno, the country’s minister delegate for gender equality, diversity and equal opportunities, in a joint statement.

“It is fundamental that the fight against violence against women be carried by all actors in society,” she added.

The United Nations, which has declared Nov. 25 the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, has flagged an upsurge in domestic violence during the coronavirus crisis lockdowns. The “Shadow Pandemic” is overwhelming domestic violence shelters and helplines.

LVMH is donating funds to the Fondation des Femmes to finance 1,000 nights in a hotel to women and children in urgent need of shelter.

Rebecca Minkoff Kicks Off ShopShops U.S. Launch – WWD

ShopShops is making its U.S. debut, just in time for the holiday shopping season. 

The New York-based livestream shopping platform is expanding its reach to the U.S. market, starting with a  holiday livestream campaign, “She’s Live on ShopShops,” featuring an array of female-founded brands. 

ShopShops founder and chief executive officer Liyia Wu will host an Instagram Live session on Wednesday through the ShopShops account, along with designer Rebecca Minkoff, to unveil the market’s U.S. launch. But the first livestream event will take place Saturday with Minkoff showing off some of her latest goods.

Nadine Ghosn Introduces Lego-Inspired Building Block Rings – WWD

PARIS — Nadine Ghosn, who broke into the realm of fine jewelry with hamburger rings, has set her sights on Legos.

Inspired by the colorful plastic pieces — instantly recognized the world over — the designer is launching the fourth pillar of her jewelry brand, called “Building Blocks.”

She came up with the idea while building a display for her pop-flavored jewelry at Le Bon Marché.

“This is cool — it’s multicolored, you can stack it the way you want,” she recalled thinking to herself. “I could take this very simple symbol and use my craft to elevate it.”

Wary of embarking on the project before ensuring there wouldn’t be risk of copyright infringement, Ghosn sought out the toy-maker’s lawyers before proceeding, and traveled to offices in Singapore to turn up a contact at the company. Ghosn had hoped to strike up a collaboration but was declined.

“My hope is that it gains momentum so they revert back to me and say ‘Hey, I like what you’re doing, maybe we can do something together,’” she said.

Twin Storms Seen Denting Central America’s Apparel Exports – WWD

MEXICO CITY — Tropical storms Iota and Eta could cost Central America up to $200 million in garment exports and see shipments delayed by one to two months as clothing factories are forced to idle production, industry observers told WWD.

They added the region, which sent nearly $7 billion of apparel to the U.S. last year, will need billions to rebuild and finance new infrastructure projects to make it more resilient to adverse weather events stemming from global warming.

“It’s a tragedy,” sighed Mario Canahuati, president of the Honduran Manufacturers’ Association (AHM) and member of the Canahuati texiles family conglomerate in the nation, whose maquila sector saw the most damage from nearly two weeks of storms as Eta hit Nov. 3, followed by Iota on Nov. 16. Both were Category 4 storms. Eta affected 3.6 million people across the isthmus, pummeling Nicaragua, Honduras and Guatemala with catastrophic winds, rain and flooding. Meanwhile, Iota is said to have displaced 400,000 people in Nicaragua, though its apparel supply chain was understood to have been left largely unscathed by the storm.
